The Smith County Medical Society Alliance has been promoting education in the Health Sciences for over 70 years, first by offering loans to nursing students, and today by offering scholarships to undergraduate college students enrolled in Allied Health Sciences as well.
Each year about 75% of our Book Fair Foundation earnings are were made available to the Scholarship Committee to fund scholarships to students at The University of Texas at Tyler (UTT) and Tyler Junior College (TJC). To date, over $700,000.00 has been distributed, from Book Fair proceeds.
In 2008, we began our first endowment for post-graduate study at UTT, the Masters of Nursing endowment. On March 26, 2010 during the Doctors' Day Gala, a check for $25,000 was presented to Dr. Mabry, President of UTT in honor of our area physicians for National Doctors' Day. This check completely funded the Masters Endowment and included $15,000 in scholarships given that year.
In 2015, we were able to donate $10,000.00 to TJC's new nursing program at the Robert M. Rogers Health and Sciences Center in addition to the scholarships awarded that year. The Smith County Medical Society (our partner organization) matched our donation to TJC.
In 2016, our membership voted to give the scholarship monies directly to TJC and UTT, to be awarded by their respective scholarship departments. We have endowed scholarships for Healthcare Careers and Nursing at TJC and a Masters and Bachelors level endowed scholarship for Nursing at UTT.
A majority of the proceeds from the sale of our Book Fair building will be added to our existing endowed scholarship funds at TJC and UT Tyler; therefore, funding Healthcare scholarships for the Tyler community for years to come.
